Role Overview
The Coupang Play Legal team is part of Coupang's Global legal team. This role will be dedicated to leading all aspects of legal support for the Coupang Play business unit and subsidiaries, including licensing, original content production, sports, and live events, as well as product and app development, operations, technology, marketing, and all associated legal and regulatory compliance requirements. We are continually looking for passionate builders who can work with us to fulfill our goals.
What you will do
Coupang Play's content: You will lead and manage all legal aspects of deals for Coupang Play's content initiatives. This will include licensed content, original productions (scripted and non-scripted), sports rights, and live events. You will partner closely with our Coupang Play teams to provide tactical and strategic advice. You will have strong and hands-on experience working in the entertainment and media industry, dealing with multinational and smaller scale media companies, broadcasters, studios, production companies, sports leagues, news publishers, and relevant regulatory bodies.
Legal advisory, contracts, and commercial arrangements: You will lead and execute as an all-around legal advisor for the Coupang Play teams on: (1) contracts and commercial arrangements that are often implemented alongside content initiatives. This may include Terms of Use, supply agreements, and services agreements, (2) product and app development to continuously enhance the Coupang Play customer experience, and (3) associated PR and marketing activities.
Cross-functional collaboration: You will partner and work collaboratively with internal business partners across Coupang, including other Coupang legal teams, Communications, Policy, and Finance, to continue to build and enhance legal and regulatory compliance, including content rating requirements, intellectual property rights (including music), privacy, and tax. You will also lead and manage outside counsel retained to provide legal services.
Essential Qualifications:
Qualified attorney in the U.S. or common law jurisdiction.
Around 15 years post-qualification legal experience. A mixture of law firm and in-house experience is preferred.
Fluency in English. Korean language skills an advantage.
Strong and hands-on background working in the entertainment and media industry.
Exceptional ability to consistently deliver creative, thoughtful, and business-oriented results that appropriately balance growth and risk in a fast-paced environment.
A willingness to learn voraciously and take on new scope and challenges.
Strong and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Sound judgement in developing and implementing legal solutions.
